Travel Insider | Sophie Worthington shares her top travel tips and inspiration
As busy mothers, designers and directors of ilovegorgeous, Sophie Worthington and Lucy Enfield have picked up quite a few tips and tricks for travelling with children as well as inspiration for their designs. As she prepares to head off on holiday with her family, we asked Sophie to share her top travel choices, packing tips and what is in her suitcase this summer…
Our favourite family holiday destination
Probably our favourite family holiday destination is Greece. We tend to go to Andros in the Cyclades mainly because we have family there and so it is home from home. It is also not too touristy and the beaches are wide, white and sandy with clear blue water and plenty of rocks for the kids to jump off. We either rent a beach cottage or stay in a hotel. I get super lazy on holiday and prefer not to cook so lunch will be a peach on the beach and supper will be with a big group of friends and family at a pre arranged beach taverna. Quite a few of us go every year and I love dipping in and out of the crowds. Plenty of down time but plenty of opportunity to be sociable if we feel like it.
Fun in the sun in Greece last year
How our holidays have changed as our children have grown up
My husband and I gawp at families travelling through airports with young children with a mixture of admiration and horror. The days of travelling with buggies, car seats, bottle sterilisers and nappies are thankfully over along with the endless frantic worry about adequate suncream applications and dissuading a 3 year old from trying to eat a poisonous oleander flower or swim without armbands. Of course teenagers have some liabilities (usually involving alcohol!) but mostly they are a joy to be with and great fun. Dinners can go on late into the night without fear of a grumpy child the following morning or missing a crucial stone island shadow project raso r nap. Our destinations remain the same, our activities differ. We would love to go to Kyoto this Autumn where my 20 year old daughter who is a fine art student at Glasgow School of Art is doing an exchange but with my 17 year old head down in A levels and the costs of travelling that far afield a little prohibitive, it might be another October half term admiring the lengthening shadows at our much loved family home in Yorkshire.

How travel inspires our designs
In all honesty this SS16 was not really inspired by our own travels although the idea of an ikat print came from a battered old bag that Lucy picked up in a greek market one summer and stayed in our inspiration box. It has been one of our most successful prints this season and it was fun translating the bones of the print into colour schemes that we felt would work for our customers. We also used sea themes in this collection with our glittering starfish print dress and sequin shell, starfish and seahorse in our knitwear. We also had a rather cool shell shaped travel bag that has proved quirky and popular.
My must-haves for the summer holidays from the SS16 collection
My must haves from our SS16 collection would be the ikat print Smoothie Suit, the Jade Dress, the New Yorker playsuit and the Leo Top and Holly Skirt for summer parties.
Our plans this summer…
This summer, we’re going to Greece!! We just can’t kick that clear water and feta salad addiction. Although this year we are branching out and spending one week in Spetes – where John Fowles wrote The Magus – which both older kids are keen to read and I have persuaded the youngest to have a go at Gerald Durrells My Family and Other Animals also set in Greece and capturing all that we love about the islands and the people that inhabit them.
My top packing tips
If you don’t love it, don’t pack it – you wont wear it.
Buy your suncream when you get there.
A kindle is lighter than 20 books and it lights up.
Get a pedicure done before you go, do not attempt to paint your own toes nails unless you have a very steady hand.
Have a fake bake before you go so you don’t light up the beach in the wrong way.
Pack easy to care for and fold pieces for both yourself and your children (our cotton crepe styles are great for this!) no one wants to iron on holiday!
3 things always in my suitcase
I don’t go in the sun any more so I always take plenty of spray tan.
I will probably live in a bikini so I always make sure I have at least 5. I also like wearing loose fitting, flowing dresses on holiday so i will have plenty of those also.
