Looking Ahead To Football In November
The main topic around football will be whether or not the Republic Of Ireland can join England, Wales, and Northern Ireland by qualifying for the European Championships in France 2016. They have play off matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina away on Friday 13th with the return leg on Monday 16th.
This will be the third time that the Republic have been involved in a play off situation. They reached Euro 2012 via the play-offs, with the side then managed by Giovanni Trapattoni beating Estonia 5-1 over two legs, but in November 2009 they were beaten in a play-off to reach the 2010 World Cup by France, who went through with the infamous Thierry Henry handball goal.
And whilst the vital play offs are happening some of the home countries will also be in friendly action with England taking on two of the games big guns in the shape of Spain away (13th Nov), and France at home (17th Nov), Wales taking on Holland in Cardiff (13th), and Northern Ireland at home to Latvia the same night.
Elsewhere in the football world we have two more rounds of the Champions League, and with none of the 4 teams top of their prospective groups at the moment these games could make or break the teams season. Man Utd have home games against CSKA (Nov 3rd) and the PSV (25th), and Man City have consecutive away games against Sevilla and Juventus on the same dates. Chelsea are home to Dynamo Kiev (Nov 4th), and then away to Maccabi Tel Aviv on (24th), and Arsenal away first away to Bayern Munich, and then home to Dinamo Zagreb on the same dates.
Over in the Europa League we also have 2 more rounds of matches (5th and 26th November), and as with the Champions League with none of the 3 British teams top of their respective leagues points are vital in order for them to progress. Celtic (whom are currently bottom of their group) have 2 home matches against Molde and Ajax, Liverpool (who are second in their group) go to Rubin Kazan and are then home stone island tracksuit top to Bordeaux, and in the most tightly contested group Tottenham (currently 3rd, 1 point of top, and 1 point off bottom) are home to Anderlecht and away to Qarabag.
In the domestic cup competitions it is the first round proper of the FA Cup starting on Friday 6th November with Didcot, the lowest-ranked team in the FA Cup, playing League Two’s Exeter City at home. The Oxfordshire outfit play in the Southern Division One South & West, the eighth tier of English football.
Wigan, who won the cup in 2013, travel to fellow League One side Bury while 2008 winners Portsmouth will host Macclesfield Town. The first round draw also features previous FA Cup winners including Notts County, Bury, Sheff United, Bradford, Barnsley, Blackpool, Coventry and Wimbledon.
And finally in the Premier League we have a south coast derby as Southampton take on new boys Bournemouth, a North London derby as Arsenal take on Tottenham, as well as Manchester City taking on Liverpool.
