Sweeney 5: What To Plan for This Weekend – (18/09/15)

Welcome to the Sweeney 5: our Friday shortlist of some great things to make your weekend that little bit more Sweeney. This week, there’s pretty much just one thing on our minds (clue: it begins with ‘rugby’), but we’ve also looked a little further from the office’s biggest passion to a couple of cultural events happening in the capital too. Hopefully you can combine the two…

We’re pretty sure you don’t need reminding about this, in fact the rugby event of the year has been in our collective diaries for months now. When you’re not glued to your TV, or indeed if you’ve been lucky enough to get a ticket, make sure you check in with at our On the Ball series for some insightful pieces on rugby and style from some of the finest England players ever, plus some opinion pieces by ex-player and overall good guy David Flatman. We’ll be watching the tournament as closely as you are – hopefully England can go all the way!

If you do manage to tear yourself away from the rugby, there’s plenty on around town this weekend. Kicking off on Saturday, the London Design Festival is a programme of over 400 events and exhibitions that spans architecture, graphics, interiors, fashion, film and art. From great exhibitions of brand new creative talent new work to retrospectives of some of the 20th stone island jeans junior Century’s most influential designers, plus fairs and pop-ups across London, there’s something for every taste.

Last year’s Pop Art exhibition at the Tate Modern was a record-breaking one, exploring the history and cultural impact of the movement. Opening this weekend is a sort-of sequel, looking at lesser-known pop artists from Asia and Latin America. A fascinating look into the way a cultural phenomenon was reinterpreted by non-Western cultures, it’s sure to get your creative juices flowing (and probably be slightly less rammed than last time too).

If you do happen to be heading to central London this weekend and are looking for something a little different, we wouldn’t normally advise heading to the tourist trap that is Trafalgar Square. However, this weekend it plays host to a mini-festival of Japanese culture, including music, dance, song, martial arts demonstrations and most importantly (for our degustative delight anyway) fantastic Japanese food, sure to be the freshest and most inventive sushi in town.

Whether you’re exploring galleries or just popping down to the pub to watch the rugby, comfort is paramount. Our Venarotta boots are made using the specialist Bologna construction which means (without going into too much technical detail) that they’re pretty much as flexible and comfortable as slippers straight out of the box. We’ve crafted them from deer skin leather which is super-soft, and finished the soles with a rubber forepart to make them both unbelievably supple and practical for unpredictable weather. The perfect autumn boot We think so.
