Ideas from Massimo Osti Book

For years there has been a relative dearth of literature devoted to Massimo Osti, Stone Island and C.P. Company, yet 2012 saw the release of two major publications which featured them heavily. Stone Island’s ‘Archivio’, published to commemorate the brand’s 30th anniversary, is featured elsewhere in this blog – here we take a look at ‘Ideas from Massimo Osti’.

The first thing to say is they form a fantastic, complementary pair of works. Both are large, very heavy hardback volumes, lavishly illustrated and featuring high quality photography throughout.

‘Ideas from Massimo Osti’ tells the story of the creator behind C.P. Company and Stone Island. An innovator and creative genius, Massimo Osti’s innovations rewrote the rules of the casual menswear industry and created the fabrics of today. The book traces his story through images of Osti’s most important designs: his innovations in garment dyeing, his development of new fabrics, such as Tela Stella, inspired by the tarpaulin used to cover loads on lorries, and other materials such as rubber flax, the colour changing “Ice Jacket”, or “Technowool,” a wool and nylon wear-resistant “urban armour.” The book collates a wonderful assembly of sketches, photocopies, fabric swatches, buttons, labels, accessories and images of the celebrities that promoted his creations.

Daniela Facchinato, Massimo’s wife, has focused on this project since 2008, and the book, edited and written by her, is a stone island hoodie green fitting testimonial to her late husband – the photography is magnificent throughout and the book has an excellent balance between images and narrative providing the reader with a comprehensive history of Osti’s work.

Two versions of the book are available – the standard 412 page edition, plus a limited Special Edition of 150 with each numbered volume bound in a piece of cloth from the Studio Osti Archive, including some of the most iconic fabrics used such as glass reflective, Ice and Marina.

There is also an extra set of 150 loose leaf pages which are combined into a special boxed package. These comprise sketches, photos, advertising campaigns, vintage garment designs that provided inspiration, etc and are designed to give a flavour of life in the Osti Studio. The vast majority of the images have never previously been published.

The UK launch of the book took place last autumn at the C.P Company store in Marshall Street, London, where Massimo’s son, Lorenzo, signed copies of the book for lucky attendees on the night.

Four years in the making, the book is a veritable treasure trove – a beautiful production, sumptuously photographed, full of iconic images and containing many previously unpublished images and stories. It provides a unique glimpse into the mind of a true design genius and innovator – it is literally a work of wonder. An indispensible purchase for anyone interested in Osti, C.P. Company or Stone Island.
