October 31st is fast approaching and even though there is always a Halloween party to go to, trick or treating to organize, pumpkins to carve or cook, there is something so understated about curling up with a scary or not so scary DVD this season. Here’s our pick of perfect family films with a couple of famous Halloween horrors thrown in too:

1. Ghostbusters (1984) – Who you gonna call This year is the film’s 30th anniversary. A firm family favourite, this halloween hit is essential easy viewing, Three unemployed parapsychology professors find their calling with a ghost removal service. The famous soundtrack will stay with you long after the credits roll. Ghostbusters is re-released in cinemas from October 28th nationwide.

2. Hocus Pocus (1993) – After three hundred years 3 witch sisters are resurrected in Salem Massachusetts on Halloween. Two teenagers, a young girl, and an immortal cat must end the witches’ reign of terror once and for all, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this silly, spooky tale. Get tissues ready for the end!

3. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – Freddy Krueger is the ultimate monster from your nightmares, he stalks you in your sleep. In this scary flick, the survivors of the undead serial killer, Freddy, must learn to take control of their own dreams to live.

4. Casper (1995) – everyone’s favourite, the friendly ghost. This is guaranteed to entertain everyone of all ages, maybe the slightly ‘dated’ nineties special effects will be lost on the kids, but will make you smile.

5. Edward Scissorhands (1990) -Everyone knows the story, boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy cuts up snow and girl dances around unable to touch the scissored man. Tim Burton’s tale of beauty starring an ‘uncommonly gentle young man’, Johnny Depp, who despite having scissors as hands falls in love with a beautiful young girl, Winona Ryder. A poetic, slightly haunting story.

6. The Addams Family (1991) – The eccentric Addams family are full of character, Wednesday, Thing and Lurch are all memorable and a stone island bomber scream. The plot consists of a con artists plan to rip off this bizarre family using an accomplice pretending to be long lost Uncle Fester. Undisputed fun for all the family.

7. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) – When it comes to cannibal films, the original is still the best. The story is now a well trodden path, but in 1974 it was shocking and truly scary. 10. Halloween (1978) – Jamie Lee Curtis stars in the first of many Halloween films. The original story is of a psychotic murderer, Michael Myers, institutionalized since childhood for murdering his sister, he then escapes and stalks an adolescent girl, Jamie Lee Curtis and her friends while his doctor desperately tries to get him back.
