Top 5 Film Releases This Year

We had the pleasure of watching some pretty epic films in 2013 such as Man of Steel, The Great Gatsby, The Butler, The Hunger Games: Cathing Fire, and so many more, that we thought it wouldn’t be possible to beat. However, judging by some of the trailers we’ve seen for new film releases, we think 2014 will be even better.

Listed below (in no particular order) are just 5 films we think are a stone island winter coats 2014 must watch for 2014 and some of our favourite titles so far.

1. Dallas Buyers Club – Released 7th February 2014
Based upon the true story of AIDS victim Ron Woodroof (Matthew McConaughey) Dallas Buyers Club tells the story of the Texan rodeo cowboy and electrician who bravely takes on the medical establishment after being told he only has 30 days left to live after testing positive for HIV. Possibly a secret Oscar contender, McConaughey lost a staggering 40 pounds to truly get into character.

2. The Monuments Men – Released 14th February 2014
You know you’re in for a real adventure when Matt Damon and George Clooney team up for a WWII inspired movie, and I can guarantee it won’t disappoint. The story follows an unlikely platoon of multi-national museum curators, artists and historians as they are set the task to locate and protect over five million pieces of precious art from the Nazis. Written and directed by Mr Clooney himself, we’re looking forward to its release in February.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Released 18th April 2014
The jury is out for this film at the moment as once again we see a triple-threat that kind of spoilt the first instalment (according to some). But nevertheless, Andrew Garfield makes a great Spider-Man and his leading Gwen Stacy (the fabulous Emma Stone) make us that much more optimistic and we can’t wait to see what happens. Watch the trailer below:

4. 12 Years A Slave – Released 10th January 2014
It’s pretty much had Oscar awards handed out already and its not even been released yet, Steve McQueen’s ’12 Years A Slave’ is set to be a biggie at the box office. This true story follows the life of Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who lives in mid-19th century New York, before he is kidnapped, sent to Louisiana in chains and forced into slavery. The cast also consists of Michael Fassbender, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and stone island winter coats 2014 Brad Pitt. A definite winner in our eyes.

5. Transformers: Age Of Extinction – Released 27th June 2014
Some may be thinking ‘oh another one’ but we think that the fourth instalment of the Transformers franchise will most certainly be better. Michael Bay has returned to the directors chair and the phrase ‘out with the old and in with the new’ is very prominent from the word go. Shia LaBeouf and Rosie Huntington-Whitely are out and Mark Wahlberg with a gang of blondes are in. Watch out for the beloved Dinobots and get set for a summer blockbuster.

So whether you agree with our above choices or not, you can certainly say that 2014 will an unforgettable year.

To North Georgia and Back: A Leaf-Peeping Mini Road Trip to the Mountains

To North Georgia and Back: A Leaf-Peeping Mini Road Trip to the Mountains
RootsRated posted this November 28th, 2016

Georgia Amicalola Falls

There’s a gorgeous patchwork of fall colors to see from Atlanta to North Georgia, but the quality of sights all depends on the route you take. The right path will take you through many-hued forests, incredible state parks, and beautiful landscapes in smaller towns. Each of these destinations is worthy of a weekend visit in its own right, but if you want to get the full overview of autumn in Georgia, then follow this two-day mini road trip itinerary. Starting and ending in Atlanta, this journey will bring you to the most majestic of fall views by car, on foot, and even by train. If you don’t have time for an overnight, many of the stops on the list make for a great day trip from the city.

Start your journey from Atlanta on Interstate 75 North, and keep going until you hit a fork toward Marietta and Chattanooga. From there, take the Red Top Mountain Road exit, which leads to the eponymous red-soil state park on Lake Allatoona. A $5 visitor pass will get you into the park, where you can take in all the waterside yellows and reds. There are more than 12 miles of trails to trek, but if you want to get a fully-rounded leaf-peeping trip, you can’t stay too long.

Fall colors abound in Georgia, especially if you know where to find them.Fall colors abound in Georgia, especially if you know where to find them. Pawel Loj.

Your next destination is a little more than an hour away: Amicalola Falls State Park, home of the tallest cascading waterfall in the Southeast. For an incredible view of the fast-flowing waters, use the 8.5-mile trail to Springer Mountain, the southern end of the Appalachian Trail. If that distance seems a bit robust or you’re feeling short on time, there are multiple other shorter routes you can choose as well. Rustic cottages and a mountain-top lodge are tempting accommodations, but don’t stop now, you’ve got more locations for fantastic foliage ahead.

A perfect spot for a midday snack is at Ellijay’s Hillcrest Orchards, which proclaims to be the most popular apple orchard in the North Georgia mountains. Buy freshly stone island white coat picked apples or a special treat from the bakery before continuing on your travels north to Blue Ridge.

Enjoy the views on foot, by horseback, or even from the water in beautiful Blue Ridge.Enjoy the views on foot, by horseback, or even from the water in beautiful Blue Ridge. Becky Vaughters/ChattOconeeNF.

Blue Ridge is easily the crowning jewel of this trip, as about 40 percent of its county’s land is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest. This lovely mountain town, which has retained a small population and low-key feel despite its undeniable tourist appeal, offers plenty of outdoor activities. Horseback riding is one of the best ways to view the changing leaves, and whitewater rafting is perfect for committed thrill-seekers. Pontoons are also available to rent for a leisurely trip around Lake Blue Ridge.

The restaurants and bars in downtown Blue Ridge keep things simple but delicious, with Joe’s BBQ on East First Street being a clear favorite. Blue Ridge Brewery on Depot Street offers local brews and live music on the weekends, while Chester Brunnenmeyer’s Bar and Grill on East Main Street offers a slightly more upscale feel with craft brews and signature cocktails, yet still proudly embraces its rustic vibe.

Stay overnight in Blue Ridge at a rental cabin or lodge overlooking the Chattahoochee. There’s no shortage of places to stay and many have luxurious outdoor hot tubs onsite. You’ve got another full day coming up, so wind-down while you can.

At the heart of Blue Ridge is its working railroad. In the morning, take the 10am scenic fall foliage trip that includes a two-hour layover in McCaysville and Copperhill, where you’ll find even more small-town charm and stunning landscapes. There’s also a pumpkin patch route where every passenger is encouraged to choose their own pumpkin to take home.

For some of the best fall foliage viewing around, make the trip to the summit Georgia’s highest peak, Brasstown Bald. For some of the best fall foliage viewing around, make the trip to the summit Georgia’s highest peak, Brasstown Bald. Ashley Harrigan.

From there, you’ll ascend to Brasstown Bald, the highest peak in Georgia at a whopping 4,784 feet. About an hour’s drive from downtown Blue Ridge, it’s right up against the North Carolina state line, which is visible—along with South Carolina and Tennessee—from the mountain’s lookout tower. Weather permitting, you can even see the Atlanta skyline to the south.

Head back toward Atlanta by way of Highway 19 South and you’ll run through Suches, dubbed the Valley Above the Clouds, and through Dahlonega, the site of the first major gold rush in the United States. Stop there for a bite on the Historic Square, where the fare runs the gamut of German, Swiss, Italian, stone island white coat Mexican, Cajun and, of course, Southern cuisine. Your route will take you into Coal Mountain in Forsyth County, too. If it’s not yet dark, you’ll be able to squeeze in a little more leaf-peeping before hopping back on Highway 19 and riding straight into Atlanta.

When you get back into city, finish off your trip with a great meal and drink at any number of fantastic pubs and restaurants.

Barbour Vintage Catalogue featuring a Barbour jacket

John Barbour and Sons has come an awful long way from its humble beginnings as a manufacturer for seamen and dock workers.  From its origins in the early 20th century in the harsh conditions of the North East of England, it’s enduring appeal and commitment to functional outerwear has seen it grow into a true global giant of the fashion industry.  From providing workwear for those on harsh climes of the North Sea, to being sported by Alex Turner as the Artic Monkey’s play the pyramid stage at Glastonbury, Barbour holds a truly special place in British style.

Princess Diana wearing the famous Barbour jacket

But just how did this functional working man’s jacket move away from the dock yards and make its way into the wardrobes of the fashionistas The shift began when in 1980 Barbour launched the catalogue for its new collection. One of the photographs used pictured a young couple in ‘country gent’ attire, Barbour jackets, tweed caps and wellington boots. It sparked the notion of the ‘Sloane Ranger’. A term often attributed to Princess Diana, herself a keen Barbour jacket fan, the ‘Sloane Ranger’ was by stereotype a young aspirational woman, seeking to establish themselves firmly in the upper class realms of middle England. An outlook defined by 1980’s Britain and the Thatcher era.

Barbour International Jackets at Repertoire Fashion

Barbour’s gritty image was not wholly reserved for shipyard workers and fisherman. Shortly before the outbreak of the First World War, Barbour had become one of the first brands to produce motorcycle clothing and in 1936 launched the first of its famous ‘Barbour International’ jackets.

Featuring four front pockets including a slanted one situated on the chest for a map, the jackets featured a belt and usually came with Barbour’s much heralded wax finish. The Barbour International jacket owes much of its stone island coat china appeal to its most famous wearer, Steve McQueen. A true style icon for men across the globe. The jacket was worn by every British National Motorcycle team up until 1977 but in 1964, it was McQueen and his American team that wore it in a way that would go down in style history.  It was donned by McQueen in the ISDT race of that year and it is McQueen’s endearing image that has seen the brand continue to use this heritage up until this very day.

Here at Repertoire fashion we have a whole range of Barbour Internationals jackets for both men and women.

The Rules for Wearing White

Wearing WhiteWearing white has been a summer tradition for over a century.  There’s something cool and refreshing about stone island red coat white clothing that makes it chic on even the hottest days.  Since it reflects light and absorbs perspiration, making it less noticeable than on other colors, the wearer looks cool and collected, even when the temperature soars.  Small wonder then that white has been a long-time favorite of residents of hot, tropical climates.

Now that summer is here and the wearing white season is officially underway in the Northern Hemisphere, I’m getting the usual seasonal questions about  how and when to wear white.  Since the rules for wearing white have changed over the years, let’s take a few minutes to review the current guidelines for wearing white:

When to Wear White

Does the wearing white only between Memorial Day and Labor Day’ rule still apply

While white cotton blouses and tops are year ’round staples, white skirts, pants, jackets, and shoes have generally been limited to summer.  Not before Memorial Day and not after Labor Day has been the rule of thumb for generations.

But is that still the case

For many traditionalists, it is.  For more fashion-forward people, it isn’t.  Designers have been creating white winter wear in heavier fabrics for years, bringing the warm-weather favorite out into the cold.

So what should YOU do It depends on your situation.

If you work in a traditional business, like accounting, banking, law, etc., and typically socialize with people from this same background, use the traditional Memorial Day/Labor Day guidelines for dressing when you’re around these folks.  YOU may be fashion-forward, showing up to work in white wool in October, but those around you probably aren’t and won’t appreciate your fashion sense.  They’ll assume you don’t know how to dress for business.

If you regularly work or socialize with a more fashion-forward crowd, on the other hand, wear white if you want, whenever you want, keeping fabrics in line with the season.  Those around you will marvel at your fashion savvy.

Wearing White Do’s and Don’ts

I heard that if you have big hips, you shouldn’t wear white from the waist down.

Not true. Since light colors (including white) visually enlarge while dark colors visually diminish, it’s true that wearing white will make you look bigger, wherever you wear it. But it doesn’t mean that you have to skip it entirely.  Instead, keep these simple camouflage techniques in mind:

DO:

1.  Opt for a monochromatic look (all one color) to appear slimmer and taller.

2.  Look for construction details or accessories that create a vertical line on the white, like a long jacket or duster, a long strand of beads, a long scarf, or a flattering, diagonal belt with a long chain or fringe.  Verticals draw the eyes up and down instead of from side-to-side.

3.  Create a focal point elsewhere on your body to draw attention away from your trouble spot. Examples:  a fabulous hat, a large, eye-catching necklace or scarf, or a pair of knock-’em-dead shoes.

Monochromatic makes you look taller
Piperlime

DON’T:

1. Put a contrasting color at or near the area you’re trying to disguise, like a dark shirt tucked into a waistband, or a darker shirt or jacket that falls to your hips. It will call attention to the area, not detract from it.2.  Wear styles with embellishments that call extra attention to your trouble spots, like pockets, embroidery, zippers, etc. If your clothes fit properly and you use these simple diversion tactics, there’s no reason to avoid white, whatever your figure challenge.

No contrasting color on an area you're trying to disguise

Wearing White Shoes

White PumpMy friend told me that you should never wear white shoes, unless they’re sandals.

Again, not true. To repeat, since white visually enlarges, wearing all-white shoes will make your feet look bigger.  Not a big deal, unless you don’t like the size of your feet. White shoes often complete a summer ensemble, making the whole look crisp and pulled-together. Still, if you don’t want to fully encase your feet by wearing white pumps, flats, or espadrilles, try:

…keeping the formality of the shoes in line with the rest of your outfit. Want to look really tall in a white monochromatic ensemble WITHOUT calling attention to your feet Wear flesh-colored shoes instead.

Other Rules For Wearing White

What other things should you keep in mind when wearing white

Don't wear white to a wedding1.  Always wear flesh colored undergarments under white clothes.  If you wear white bras, panties, slips, or camisoles, the outline will show underneath your clothes.

2.  Don’t wear all-white to a wedding, unless you’re the bride or a member of the bridal party. A white blouse under another color suit is okay, but the tradition still holds firm:  white is reserved for the bridal party.

3.  If white makes you look pale or just isn’t your color, try off-white instead.  Pure whites look best on skin with blue undertones, off-whites look best on skin with yellow undertones.

So what’s the bottom line here White can be an elegant staple in your wardrobe, whatever your shape.  Just remember that it visually enlarges whatever it’s against, so choose clothing and accessories that flatter your shape and enhance your assets.  Don’t avoid wearing white – disguise it! – so you can enjoy its many benefits instead of stumbling on its drawbacks.

What to Wear to A Class Reunion

What to Wear to a Class ReunoinSo you’ve got a class reunion coming up and you want to look great.  But you also want to look thinner, taller, younger, and more prosperous than your former classmates, all while being comfortable.

Sound impossible

Not necessarily.  The main things you have to remember are:  place, time, and activity.

Place

Class reunions can take place anywhere from basements to bars, restaurants to resorts.  It all depends on where you went to school.  Different venues have different dress codes, so you need to start with where it’s going to be to determine what you should wear.

School gyms, basements, and cafeterias typically call for casual attire.  So do places like bars, pubs, or modestly priced restaurants.  Opt for a cute dress, cropped pants, or even jeans.
Trendy bars and moderately-priced restaurants call for dressier cocktail attire.  Try a little black dress or trousers with an evening top.

Country clubs, private clubs, and upscale restaurants also call for dressy cocktail attire; they may also require formal evening attire, depending on what’s going on.  Try a cocktail dress or evening gown, depending on the situation.

Time

For day events like brunches, picnics, or religious services, opt for day wear suitable for the occasion.

For events after 5 pm, opt for evening pieces suitable for the occasion.

Activity

Some class reunions involve a single evening event for the classmates and their partners; others span a weekend and include things like pool parties and picnics for families.  I’ve heard of class reunions where everyone met at the local crab shack and shot pool and drank beer while others had a big charity golf event followed by a formal evening ball.

Dress for the activity.  Even if you have no plans to go swimming, for example, wear shorts and a top or a cute sun dress so you can sit poolside and chat with those who do.  Wouldn’t be caught dead in a cocktail dress or evening gown   Then pair nice trousers with an evening top so you look and feel like you belong.

The main goal is to have fun and catch up, not worry how you’re dressed.  If you strive to match your attire with the mood of the place, time, and activity, you can put your clothes out of your mind and easily accomplish your mission.

Now let’s talk about some of those other goals, the hidden agendas we often have:

Look Thinner

Two what to wear tips you can use anytime to look thinner include:

Look thinner Wear Clothes That Fit Properly

Clothes that are too small or too big will make you look bigger than you are.  Bras and panties that dig in and create rolls and bulges under your clothes will also call attention to trouble spots.  Instead, wear properly fitting clothes and undergarments and you’ll instantly look thinner.

Wear Clothes that Draw the Eye Up and Down, Not Side to Side

Horizontal lines make you look wider, as do big blocks of color from head to toe.  Vertical and diagonal lines make you look thinner, as do monochromatic ensembles.  If you think up and down and not side-to-side as you put together your outfits, you’ll soon be hearing, Have you lost weight more often than you think.

Look Younger

Age Appropriate AttireIf you’re still wearing your hair and makeup the same way you did when you graduated from high school, it’s time for a change.  If you think wearing your teenage daughter’s clothes will make you look hip and happening, think again.  The fastest, easiest ways to look younger are:

Update your hairstyle
Soften your makeup
Dress age-appropriately in clothes that fit properly.

A great place to see current styles worn age-appropriately is Spiegel’s Reality Dressing.  They show their current styles worn age-appropriately on women ages 20-60.  You don’t have to give up being chic just because you hit a milestone birthday; you just need to know what to hide and what to show in order to take age out of the equation.  It really is that easy!

Look Successful

The easiest way to look prosperous without saying anything boils down to one word:  accessories.  Sunglasses, handbags, shoes, beautiful jewelry – heck, even powdering your nose with a Chanel compact – speak volumes without saying a word.  The best part   You boys stone island coat don’t have to buy anything.  Rent it for the weekend and they’ll be none the wiser! (Wink, wink)

Be Comfortable

Wear occasion-appropriate clothesThe easiest way to look great and be comfortable is simple: find clothes and shoes that fit properly and are occasion-appropriate.  When anything you wear is too small, you’re uncomfortable.  When you show up to a rodeo in a cocktail dress or a cocktail party in jeans, you’re uncomfortable.  So don’t do either.  Find pieces that fit and allow you to do what you’re there to do (dance, sit down, run a race) and that are appropriate for the occasion.

Deciding what to wear to a class reunion shouldn’t be stressful.  If you use these simple what to wear tips and take the time to consider the place, time, and activity to find clothes that are comfortable and allow you to look great, you can’t help but have a good time.  PLAN, don’t stress.  It’s the best way to catch up with old friends.

The poor treatment of fashion models

Fainting for fashion

Models at Kayne West’s New Work fashion show fainted during the show held at Roosevelt island, which fashion designer Vanessa Beecroft said was due to stress. The more likely cause was having models stand outside in the sweltering heat for hours, some wearing clothing that was appropriate for the temperature. This article, however, is not about Kayne’s show itself. It’s about the models and the struggles and abuses they face. Modelling is not always the glamorous life it’s made out to be.

models-casting-exploitationn

Laws protecting models are often inadequate, and stories of sexual harassment and financial exploitation crop up repeatedly. Like the people who make our clothes, those who are hired to represent brands and trends and create a desire for those clothes often face exploitation. The stats are disturbing. A 2012 study found that:

30 percent of respondents reported experiencing “inappropriate touching” on the job and 28 percent said they had been pressured to have sex at work. Additionally, 87 percent of respondents had been asked to pose nude at a job or casting without prior notice

In other cases, agents pressured models into sleeping with them, telling the models that doing so would help their career. Such exploitation is the worst kind there is: taking advantage of people in vulnerable positions with the promise of a better career that may never come.

The laws to prevent this harassment are weak. In New York, models are considered independent contractors who are not protected by workplace harrassment laws. Models are often left to fend for themselves in a world that views them as expendable and have few legal options for dealing with sexual harassment.

Sara Ziff founder of model alliance

Sara Ziff founder of model alliance

Models, like the people who make our clothes, also face exploitation in the form of the low wages they receive. In an op-ed in Business of Fashion, Sara Ziff, founder of Model Alliance, states:

The amount a model is paid for her work is negotiated between the agency and the client. However, models are not always notified by their agencies of the anticipated rate of pay or compensation in advance of the booking, nor are they always given the opportunity to turn down work. Models — many of whom are minors — have low bargaining power and are frequently not paid all of their earned wages, are paid wages late, are paid only after complaining about non-payment, are paid in “trade” instead of money, or are simply not paid at all

Properly negotiating for a wage means that both parties are properly informed of the compensation before the work is done. Both parties should be on equal grounds with no power difference. That is not the case with models, especially minors.

Then there are the demands put on models’ appearances. The fashion industry has often aimed to create the ‘perfect’ image, regardless of whether or not such an image is safely attainable. Fortunately, efforts have been made at correcting this problem. In another op-ed in Business of Fashion, Kate Abnett reports:

In June, the UK advertising watchdog banned a Saint Laurent campaign image because it featured an “unhealthily underweight” model. In April, France passed a law that banned French modelling agencies from working with models that have a BMI (Body Mass Index) below 18. In 2013, Israel banned companies from working with models that have a BMI below 18.5

However, these country-by-country approaches are limited. Models may be protected by reasonable standards in one country, but are required to lose weight as soon they go to model in another country. A more unified approach is needed across the fashion industry to ensure models are properly protected.

As bad as models fainting at Kayne West’s fashion show is, it is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the struggles faced by models.

Vintage Clothing 101

When I was in third grade, I was cast as the grandmother in our class play. When I told my mother I needed a little old lady costume, she took me to this old Victorian house in downtown Colorado Springs. The stairs creaked as we climbed the front porch. Inside, the light was dim and the place smelled like a musty old attic. Everywhere I looked, in what had once been the main living areas of the house, were row upon row of outdated clothes, hats, and shoes — like the kind my great grandmother and great aunt still wore.

This was my introduction to vintage clothing.

It wasn’t a good one. At the age of eight, I couldn’t begin to fathom why anyone would wear stuff like this. Why walk around looking decades out of style ON PURPOSE It just didn’t make any sense. For the next twenty years, whenever someone said, vintage clothing, that musty-smelling house in the Springs came to mind.

My opinion changed in the early 90’s. That’s when my boss’s sister opened a vintage clothing store near Clemson University, in their home state of South Carolina. Pat would tell me how quickly those college students would wipe out Nancy’s inventory, forcing her on a constant quest to re-stock the store. Nancy had even stooped to running a We Pay Cash for Old Clothing ad in the local obituary pages, and scored a big hit when one of the blue stone island coat grand old families in the area called her after their matriarch died. The old gal had worn couture for nearly sixty years but had never thrown anything out. Nancy paid $2,000 for the lot and promptly resold all of it in her store, pocketing nearly $40,000 in a week.

That was the first time it occurred to me that there might be more to this vintage clothing thing than meets the eye.

Turns out there is – A LOT more.

So why do people wear vintage

There are lots of reasons, including:

1. Great Workmanship

Once upon a time, quality workmanship was the rule. Beautiful linings, elegant closures, finished seams – it was how clothes were made back in the day. Today you pay extra for beautifully finished apparel.

2. Unique Look

Some people prefer vintage because they feel the old styles best express their viewpoint. Others pair vintage pieces with newer styles for a unique look. Still others want a one-of-a-kind look for a big party or event without the one-of-a-kind price tag that typically goes with it. Vintage helps them do that.

3. Classic Styling

Great styles are great styles whether they were conceived last week or two generations ago. If you like to watch old movies like I do, you’ll notice that many of the day suits and evening gowns from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s are as chic today as they were when they debuted. Want an easy way to capture some Old Hollywood glamour Wear some Old Hollywood-era pieces.

4. Old School Accessories

Once upon a time, a woman wasn’t properly dressed unless she wore a hat and gloves when she left the house. You could tell she had married well if her husband gave her a parure [puh-roor] (matching suite of jewels), and you knew she traveled frequently if she had a matching set of luggage. Today, few women bother with any of these accessories – which means that those who do really stand out.

5. Cost Effective

Love designer clothes but not the price tag that goes with them Then look to vintage for your designer fix. You’ll get the brand name and the designer look WITHOUT the current season price. Opt for simple lines and classic styling for a timeless look.

6. Going Green

Wearing old styles is one of the easiest ways to get on board with the green movement. Why buy new when you can recycle old

So is everything that’s not current season considered vintage No. Technically, here’s the age breakdown:

Antique – anything prior to 1920. Most antique clothing is bought to display in a collection, not to wear. Antique jewelry can be worn or displayed.

Vintage – anything from the 1920 to 1980.

Modern or contemporary – anything produced in the last 25 years.

the first garment I ever made for my kids: Jenn
the first garment I ever made for my kids: Jenn

This post is going to be a little different than the rest of the first garment posts shared here by my lovely fellow contributors, as my first garment was not sewn.

Nursery 032

The first garment I ever made for my *future* kids junior stone island coat was a knitted cardigan.  I began working on this, which is the cable yoke jacket from Simply Baby by Debbie Bliss, when I was pregnant with my first daughter Arden in 2008.  I cast on before we knew what we were having, and I wanted a gender-neutral color besides.  Orange was the winner!

Arden Jean 087

This and other knitting projects were my saving grace since I was put on bedrest at the end of my pregnancy for gestational hypertension.  This was pre-blogging, so my creative outlets were shared only with family, friends and Facebook!

October 039

I could not have chosen a better project – this little jacket has warmed both my girls from infancy on through toddlerhood.  With a turn of the sleeve it worked for Arden while still crawling and on through until she was about two years old.  Here it accompanies another Mommy made (and a first refashion) item – the 90 Minute Shirt from Dana at MADE.

October 042

I love the cables on the yoke!  I’m not a fast knitter, and I appreciate some details to keep things interesting as I knit and purl along.  This jacket has it all – seed stitch, cables, a cute collar, and some stockinette for some rest in between the details!

Hadley 4 Months 118

After a stint in storage, the sweater got to come back out to keep Hadley cozy.  Hadley was larger than Arden at the start and was able to wear it from about four months on.  She’s still big for her age and now at two and a half, Hadley is only a few inches shorter and about three pounds lighter than Arden is at five.

Hadley even sported the cardigan for her first birthday pictures with The Party Dress I made using The Cottage Mama’s free pattern.

Sadly, the jacket is now too small for Hadley to wear, so I’m planning to hang it on a cute wooden hanger in her room as part of a gallery wall in her room.  Maybe some day it will pass on to one of them to dress their children in!

The Rana Plaza Tragedy

The deadliest disaster in the history of the garment industry worldwide

On Wednesday morning, April 24, 2013 at 8:00 a.m., all 3,639 workers refused to enter the eight-story Rana Plaza factory building because there were large and dangerous cracks in the factory walls.  The owner, Sohel Rana, brought paid gang members to beat the workers, hitting them with sticks to force them to go into the building.  Managers of the five factories housed in Rana Plaza also threatened the frightened workers, telling them that if they did not return to work, there would be no money to pay them for the month of April, which meant that there would be no food for them and their children.  They were forced to head into work at 8:00 a.m.
At 8:45 a.m. the electricity went out and the factories’ five generators kicked on.  Almost immediately, the workers felt the eight-story building shake and heard a loud explosion as the building collapsed, pancaking downward.
The 3,639 workers toiled in five factories housed in the Rana trench coat stone island Plaza building, producing clothing for U.S., Canadian and European clothing labels and retailers.  Eighty percent of the workers were young women, whose ages ranged from 18-20 years.  Their standard shift lasted 13 to 14½ hours, from 8:00 am to 9-10:30 pm, toiling 90 to 100 hours a week with just two days off a month.  Young “helpers” earned 12 cents/hr, while “junior operators” took home 22 cents/hr ($10.56/wk), and senior sewers received 24 cents/hr ($12.48/wk).

The owner of Rana Plaza seems to have widespread political connections and so the trial for this disaster is being delayed, as alleged by several authentic sources. Even the persecutor could not indict the higher government official responsible for this disaster in the trial. In addition, the workers (mostly women) killed or injured by this disaster have not yet been compensated properly by government or garments’ owners’ association as well as buyers.

We demand justice for the workers injured and killed by this Rana Plaza manmade disaster.
